Midsommar
When I saw the film Midsommar in theaters I knew that I was going to want to recreate the May Queen look one day. This was such a fun project for me and honestly, when I created the crown it was during a time when I really needed some creativity in my life. I started out by collecting a lot of fake flowers. If you’re wanting to recreate this look for Halloween or as a cosplay I suggest checking out Hobby Lobby and Joann’s, not only do they have an amazing selection of fake florals, but they are constantly on sale. If you don’t look for the sales then this can become a very expensive craft! I was also lucky to find a good chunk of flowers at my local Dollar Tree, which was a very affordable option for filler flowers (they were not as cute or well made as the other store’s florals, but they got the job done lol).
I searched for different flower types and sizes, I knew I wanted my crown to be colorful. I also knew that I wanted to do her bigger crown vs the normal-sized flower crowns. Obviously, you can figure out which look you want to go with. If I had all of the time and money in the world I would have also created her flower dress, but I had to go with the good old photoshop route for that part.
I purchased a styrofoam piece for the foundation of my crown and some crafty/florist wire for the four bits that were going to stick up. I used a lot of hot glue….like a lot and just placed the flowers in a way that I thought looked best. I have attached a TikTok video at the end of this blog to show a little of my process. If I were to remake this crown, I would have chosen something more sturdy for the four parts that stuck out. The weight of the flowers made the wire parts fall to the side over time. This wasn’t a huge issue for me because I just needed the crown for an hour or two. But if you’re going to wear this as a costume for longer than two hours I suggest finding an alternative!
I had so much fun creating this look and photoshoot! So far this is one of the coolest pieces I have ever made and I am so proud of the outcome.
